The most popular classical educational model divides learning into three phases. In the grammar stage, elementary school students memorize and recite the “basic components” for further learning in a wide range of subjects. The second stage, Dialectics, teaches high school students to think about the knowledge they have acquired. The third stage, Rhetoric, guides high school students to understand the deeper topics of what they already know, to communicate with others, and to apply those lessons to their own lives.
I have to be honest and say that I don't know what several of these “types of educational styles” are. My answers to this questionnaire were based solely on what works for my family after several years of trial and error. If we find that it works well for us, you agree or totally agree. Epic failures marked the bubbles of disagreement.
Things that we haven't tried or that really didn't matter much to us have a bubble in between. In fact, I'm surprised that some of the scores were so high. Well, I guess I'm quite eclectic, since my highest score was Reggio (which I've somehow never heard of in more than 10 years of homeschooling). The problem lies in the inflexibility that homeschooling children impose when they try to follow the often arbitrary “rules” of the various methods of homeschooling.
Taking a homeschooling style quiz will help you more easily determine which method works best for you and your family. I started with classical music, but I have become a relaxed (that's the unschooled part) and eclectic student studying at home. Traditional education is a homeschooling style that uses traditional textbooks and teaching methods, much like those found in a public school. It seems quite typical for students who study at home to start out more structured at first and become more flexible and relaxed as time goes on.
Anyone who tries to tell you that any particular method of homeschooling is the only true way to educate is totally wrong. Finally, after researching all these homeschooling methods, I became convinced that classical education was the way forward. It doesn't fit well with the traditional school model, and I decided to homeschool her in the middle of second grade.
